"I believe you're going... my way?"- The Hitch-Hiker
The Hitch-Hiker was the unnerving man that terrorized Nan Adams while she was on a cross-country drive from Manhattan, New York to Los Angeles, California in the seventeenth episode of the first season, The Hitch-Hiker.
The Hitch-Hiker[]
He first appeared after Nan Adams' car went off of the road of a Pennsylvania Turnpike. She spotted the man across the street, thumbing for a ride. He wore a tattered jacket and a shabby hat, and Nan was creeped out by his sudden appearance and followed the mechanic to a nearby gas station, where she spotted the man in her cosmetic mirror, again thumbing for a ride. Nan wonders why he would follow her and her emotions go from unnerved to terrified when the man appears throughout her drive, still thumbing for a ride. Her casual drive goes to a fleeting trip across the country, in a desperate attempt to outrun the hitchhiker.
The hitchhiker appears across the railroad tracks when Nan is waiting for a train to pass. Nan becomes frantic and tries to drive away before the hitchhiker approaches her, only for her car to die on the tracks, directly in the path of the oncoming train. She manages to pull back moments before being hit. Later on, Nan picks up a passenger, terrified of being alone, and attempts to run him down when she sees him, causing the passenger to think she has gone crazy. Nan stops to call her mother, only to find that her mother has had a nervous breakdown after the death of her daughter. Nan realizes that the hitchhiker must be the angel of death and gets into her car. The hitchhiker appears in her rearview mirror and asks if she is ready to come with him. Nan accepts.
