"Downtime" is the twelfth episode of the 2019 series of The Twilight Zone and is the second episode of the second season.

Synopsis[]

On the day she scores her dream promotion, a hard-working woman starts to realize her entire existence may be one large dreamlike state.

Opening Narration[]

Michelle Weaver is a woman who's worked her entire life to get to where she is in the world. Now as this new chapter begins, it's the world itself that's about to change. She's about to take a break from life as she knows it and book an extended stay here in the Twilight Zone.

Plot[]

Act I[]

Hotel hospitality employee Michelle Weaver speaks with her boss Reggie regarding promotion to manager. She states her qualifications which bore him, so she tells a joke about a clerk willing to help her boss and an angry old man looking to buy half a head of lettuce. Reggie laughs and gives her the job, saying he's never seen anybody more dedicated. He tells her "you really picked the right life." A handful of hotel employees outside the room congratulate her.

Down in the hotel lobby, Michelle is seen earning the respect of both her employees and customers alike. One angry couple - the Desmonds - are particularly rude to the concierge, so she steps in and upgrades their room at no charge. She goes on break and calls her husband Carl who also is very happy for her. Suddenly Michelle goes into a brief shock. She looks around and sees everyone around her go into a trance; she follows them outside and sees a giant red orb in the sky looking down at the world. It emits an ear-piercing noise, then everyone looks up and stares into it with eerie jaw-dropping expressions. An older woman walks up to Michelle and asks if she knows how long downtime will be; confused, Michelle runs off as the woman looks into the orb and drops her jaw.

A panicked Michelle runs down the street and asks an unaffected cop what is happening. He tells her it's "scheduled maintenance" and that they need to "wake up" before staring up into the orb himself. Michelle runs all the way home to find Carl unaffected; however, when she tells him about the orb, he spontaneously breaks into an Irish accent and also rambles about downtime. He asks if Michelle remembers who she was before she was Michelle, but she has no idea what he's talking about. Carl says he will "contact them... to send some help", then walks outside and succumbs to the orb.

Two young skateboarders then break into Michelle’s house saying they're from "customer service". Michelle pulls a knife on them despite their insistence they’re here to help. The knife suddenly disappears out of her hand; the skateboarders play her a video for SleepAway, a digital program for "identity tourism". As a person dreams, a machine hooked to the side of their head digitally places them in an avatar capable of living out any fantasy they want with the only rule being "Don't Break Character". Michelle has a very hard time believing this, but the skateboarders confirm she is a character being controlled by S Phineas Lowell. They explain he has been controlling her choices and the path she has taken, but that Phineas had a heart attack (the shock Michelle felt earlier) during his last game session and has been placed in a coma — leaving his consciousness still synced to Michelle. The skateboarders want to force an un-sync in order to save what's left of Phineas's mind, but Michelle panics over what this will do to her.

Michelle refuses to believe anything except her own reality and wishes to wait things out until the downtime is over. The skateboarders then bring Phineas's wife Ellen into the house. She stops the skateboarders from the forced un-sync — claiming they don’t know how the game really works — and asks to talk to Michelle alone.

A voice from the orb announces the maintenance will finish in 20 minutes. As they walk outside, Ellen compliments Michelle for being a strong and beautiful person; she understands why Phineas chose her as his avatar. Ellen talks about the first time she met Phineas — at an antique shop where she accidentally cracked a lamp and he whispered to her "Don't break it." Phineas repeated the phrase when he proposed to Ellen 5 years later, this time pointing to his heart. Ellen reiterates that if Michelle doesn't wake up, there will be no other way to save Phineas's mind. Michelle starts to feel like he’s known Ellen her whole life. Ellen sporadically kisses Michelle, then asks her to try to wake up with her. They both look up to the orb, but Michelle — still not convinced of her true identity – backs down at the last second. The orb watches her as she runs off.

Act III[]

The skateboarders cruise the streets looking for Michelle, who briefly hides among the stiff people standing in the streets before returning to the hotel. She grabs the penthouse key and heads up to find the Desmonds in their trance staring out the windows. Michelle knocks Mr. Desmond over then lies down. A pigeon flies up to her window and upon seeing her, lets out the ear-piercing screech from earlier. This leads the skateboarders to the hotel as the orb announces maintenance will end in 5 minutes.

Michelle takes the skateboarders on a wild goose chase through the hotel before eventually ending up on the roof. As the clock ticks down, a window washer named Tom approaches her and says he is "Escalated Customer Service". He apologizes for the inconvenience and says he called the skateboarders off, claiming they were just trying to help fix the "error". He explains the game world has been experiencing many recent issues such as a section where people entered into a laundromat and exited through a manhole. He then talks about Michelle’s situation, saying that Phineas is welcome to stay in the game and continue playing as Michelle so long as she signs a waiver relieving Sleepaway from any liability. Michelle doesn't want to stay in this world now that she knows it's fake, but Tom tells her to forget about Phineas. He reveals Phineas took sleeping pills before logging into the game and was taken off life support 45 minutes ago — meaning there is nothing for Phineas to wake up to. She reluctantly signs the waiver.

Downtime ends, and the orb disappears. The people snap out of their trances and continue on with whatever they were doing before. Michelle is seen back at work enjoying her normal life as a hotel manager. Ellen walks into the lobby and asks to book a room for a few weeks. Michelle smiles at her.

Closing Narration[]

How would you feel if you spent your life making your dreams a reality only to find out that reality itself is a dream all along? We can never know what makes something real. But today, Michelle Weaver has found meaning in an otherwise synthetic world. And that's good enough for her here in the Twilight Zone.
